Galaxiki Community BlogSubscribe via RSS Trench WarfareJuly 21, 2008by danansan Medics scrambled around the makeshift sickbay, trying to save the lives of hundreds of wounded soldiers. At the front of the room, a wounded soldier in a tattered dark red uniform lay on a broken pillar of stone that was serving as a bed. There was a deep cut up his arm and his wings had been shattered, but the real problem was the deep wound that was evident in his chest. A few doctors were near. They didn't hold much hope of the nanos holding, the wound was so deep. It was a miracle that the soldier was still alive. And alive he was, though feverish. "Those bloody Zionites," said Lieutenant Cain conversationally, "Don't know when their beaten." "And are they?" asked ARN, "Beaten." Cain laughed, "No, they're not beaten. Not this time anyway. I was referring to South Anam, back in the day." "Oh right. So they're winning now?" "Obviously." The lieutenant closed his eyes, "Mortar incoming." Both soldier rolled out from their position and ran for the next piece of cover. Behind them, the bunker went up in an explosion. Similar explosions rocked the rest of the trench, just as forces from the Zionite 44th Barcelonan Silver Berets came over the top. ARN swung his rifle in an arc, taking out three of the Zionites in a wave of firepower. Ahead of him captain Cain was firing as well. Out of the corner of his eye ARN spotted a Zionite aiming at him. The Hytopolinian fired first, hitting the Zionite in the chest, where the Silver Beret's armour absorbed most of the blast. But there was enough force to knock him off his feet. Cursing at the poor shot, ARN ran forward to finish the job. The Zionite soldier desperately tried to fire off a shot, but it went wide. Then ARN's bayonet went into the chest, cutting through the armour, and killing the soldier dead. ARN got up and looked around. The trench was chaotic, but filling with Zionite dead as the Regicide Guard did their work. A Silver Beret came over the top just next to ARN, and met his fate at the end of the Hytopolinian's bayonet. On the pillar the soldier's condition was getting worse. The nanos were refusing to latch onto anything, and the doctors were in a heated discussion on whether to pull the plug on the young soldier. And then there were none thought ARN as he shot the head of a Zionite officer with a close range blast from his rifle. And it was true as well. There were no Zionites left in the trench. Lieutenant Cain raised his rifle triumphantly. There were cheers. ARN joined in, though his heart wasn't really in it. The sheer numbers of the Silver Berets were taking their toll on the Alliance's elite. Of the two hundred Regicide Guard that had landed on the planet, there were fewer than ninety left. A few more attacks and it could all be over. "Sir, there's an incoming from Captain H21C1," said corporal Farln, the Guard's communication officer, "He says that we need to push at the Zionites." "Ask him who'll be supporting us." Ordered the Lieutenant. Farln asked the question, then answered the Lieutenant, "He says that we shouldn't need support, sir." "Well you tell that stuck up…" "Sir! Zionites!" cried someone, as another wave of Silver Berets jumped down into the trench. ARN raised his rifle and shot two down before they could react. The doctors were no longer considering pulling the plug. A tough looking Fori had shown up and told them not to. Who were they to argue with a Regicide Guard? ARN had lost his rifle. He was fighting with a short sword in one hand and a laser pistol in the other. He swung the sword, cutting out the throat of a Silver Beret. He kicked the body out of the way, then fired his pistol into the face of another. Realising that his pistol was out of batteries he dropped both it and his short sword, pulling a longer, slightly curved sword from inside his coat. This he wielded two handed, cutting down another Zionite, In the din and chaos of battle he didn't know what was happening elsewhere, but he could only see a few of his comrades. Must be the final push he thought grimly as he ran a Silver Berets through. He staggered back as a rifle round hit him in the stomach. Only the protective vest he wore underneath his uniform saved him. Seizing the opportunity, a Zionite ran forward and lunged at ARN with his bayonet. ARN ducked aside just in time, but received a deep cut to his arm. He raised his sword and hit back at the Zionite. The blasé struck home, severing the Zionite's leg. The Silver Beret fell back screaming, and ARN prepared to finish. Just then he received an axe in the back. His tough insect wings saved him, but they shattered. ARN fell forwards, rolling over as he hit the ground, and found himself looking into the eyes of a Zionite officer, who raised a pistol and… Fell dead with a laser wound to the head. All around the trench Zionites were being shot dead. At the back of the trench a large number of Fori riflemen were lined up and firing into the Zionitesm who fell back. Right along the trench, the members of the Regicide Guard that were still alive pulled themselves up from the trench. Lieutenant Cain spoke: "Thank you for saving my men. Are you here to support our push?" A Fori in the uniform of a major stepped forwards, inducing salutes from the members of the Guard, "Major Flenan, 392nd Fori. There will be no pushing. All forces have been ordered to pull back to the Tombs. Move out!" The Fori climbed out of the trench, and marched back towards the tombs. The Guard members looked at each other, then climbed out of the trench to follow them. ARN was one of the last out. He looked at the survivors. "God," he said to corporal Fraln as she climbed out next to him, "There are only about thir…" He took a step back, looking with surprise at the blood that was pouring from his chest. "Sniper…" he managed, then collapsed. As he lay in the ground he felt little pain, only a tiredness. Out of the corner of his eye he vaguely saw Farln fire off a shot, presumably at the sniper. Then he closed his eyes and darkness engulfed him. ARN's eyes flickered open as he regained consciousness. He was lying on some sort of stone slab. There were white shapes everywhere, but the light was poor and he couldn't make anymore out. "Where am I?" His mouth was dry. "You're in the medic's tent inside the tombs." ARN looked around for the source of the voice, then things shifted into focus, and he saw Corporal Farln. "Corporal Farln, it's good to see you." He croaked "Corporal NS124, it's good to see you alive." Want to create your own solar system in our online galaxy?
