Galaxiki Community BlogSubscribe via RSS The New Age of Piracy, part oneAugust 16, 2008by danansan Yutza Zekan observed the small hunched up figure with interest. It was a Vike, a species that Yutza didn't like much. Normally, he wouldn't let one into his palace, but these were exceptional circumstances. The commander of the large pirate fleet that had docked at the outside of his system had sent this one as an emissary. Yutza had been a pirate himself, back in the old days, and he could guess at what this pirate leader would want. He'd want the system, something Yutza wasn't prepared to give. The only reason he was talking to this emissary was to buy his fleet time to prepare to attack the pirates. The longer he could drag this out for, the better. He glanced back down at the monitor that showed what was going on in the waiting room. The Vike was getting impatient. Yutza pressed a button on his desk, and the door to his office swung open, emitting billows of smoke as they did. Yutza knew the part that show would play in these negotiations. As she hobbled in, Lezita Von Reedo barley noticed the look on Yutza's face. She had seen that look all to many times for it to make much of an impact. That look of pity, mixed with a faint disgust. She laboriously walked towards a chair on the opposite side of the table to Yutza. There, leaning on the table with one hand, she pulled he chair out, and slowly sat down. She was playing up her disability, as she usually did at this sort of meeting. She found that it distracted the opposition. She didn't pull the chair back in: she wanted Yutza to be able to see her legs. As a final touch, she leaned her hardwood walking stick on the table, making sure that Yutza could see her doing it. Yutza tore his gaze away from the twisted legs of the Vike, and began proceedings. "Hello miss," he said, "I am Yutza Zekan, the ruler of this system. Firstly, what's your name?" "I am Lezita Von Reedo," replied the Vike, "Acting on behalf of Turen Wutta, the commander of the ships that are currently parked in your metaphorical back yard." "Can I get you a drink, miss Von Reedo?" asked Yutza, rising from his elaborate throne. "No thank you, mister Zekan." "Please," said Yutza congenially, as he poured himself a glass of Kafika, "Call me Yutza." "I'd rather not," said Lezita simply, "Is that Sejooksons Kafika you're drinking, mister Zekan," she added, changing the subject. "Yes," snapped Yutza. He wasn't used to people disobeying him. "I thought it was," continued Lezita lightly, apparently unaware of Yutza's annoyance, "One of my cousins owns the brewery." "Really," said Yutza through gritted teeth, "How fascinating." "Yes it is. But now," declared Lezita, suddenly serious, "To business." Lezita watched Yutza's face carefully as she outlined the proposals. She had succeeded in annoying him, which was good. An annoyed mind wasn't a focused mind. And he was staring openly at her mangled legs now, showing that they were also distracting him. "Absolutely not," said Yutza dismissively when she had finished, "Give me one good reason why I should give up my system to your master." "Perhaps," said Lezita levelly, "you misunderstood me. I don't want you to give your system to my 'master', I want you to give it to me." "You?" Yutza laughed, "You couldn't rule a pirate haven. You're a cripple, for the gods sake." "I may be a cripple," retorted Lezita, "But at least I have a brain." "Well it's irrelevant. I will not be giving my system up to you." "Well then," sighed the Vike, "I guess I'll have to kill you then." Yutza laughed again, "And just how are you going to do that, little Vike? You were searched at the door. You don't have any guns." "Everyone," stated Lezita, "Is so obsessed with guns." And with that, she picked up her walking stick, jumped forward with surprising speed and agility, and smashed Yutza on the side of the head. The Hardwood stick sent him sprawling, stunned. Lezita went to the floor too. With her stick hitting Yutza, she had had nothing to help her legs keep their balance. Pulling herself up, she went round the table as fast as she could. When she reached the place where Yutza was sprawled, she leaned on the table with one hand, and raised the stick above her head with the other. "Cripples have feelings too," she said brightly, then brought the stick down on his head with all her strength. When Yutza's guards finally arrived, they found Lezita sitting on the table, wiping Yutza's brains from the end of her stick with a part of his clothes. "You're a bit late," she said to them severely, "Zekan is dead already." "You killed him," said their captain in a shocked voice, "You killed Yutza!" "Yes, well done for working that out," replied Lezita sarcastically, "Top marks for observation." "You killed uncle Yutza!" cried the captain, fumbling for his gun, "I'll kill you!" "Please Sergeant," Lezita addressed to the guard behind the captain (who was still trying to pull out his gun), "help this man deal with his grief." The sergeant hesitated for a moment, then pulled out his own gun and smoothly shot the captain in the head. "Well handled," said Lezita, "Now, I have to leave the planet for a few hours. While I'm gone, here's a list of people I want dead by the time I get back," she handed a small piece of paper to the sergeant, "you, my fine sergeant, will be in charge of this," she turned and began to walk out of the room, plucking a gun from one of the guards as she went, "Don't let me down, Captain." The Sergeant smiled as Lezita left. He had noticed the change from sergeant to captain. As her shuttle took off from the surface, Lezita prepared herself to meet her master.
