Galaxiki Community BlogSubscribe via RSS Out of the Dark Part 5-RequimJuly 24, 2008by wert Again this is about x2 too long to go in here so its in the KBW. But then agin have a taster heres the first paragraph. Thant looked up. Vermillion was coming back! Thant smiled. The Kraken was so close now; the walls of reality had grown very thin. The central atrium of the Tomb Labyrinth was a huge round coliseum of a room with a ring of dark black stone pillars encircling the room’s central dais. On this dais, was a huge pentagram carved into the stone and filled with Thant’s blood. Thant stood up and walked over to his bag resting at the base of one pillar. He took out his sword from the bag and twirled it in his hands listening to the hum as the blade sliced through the air. Then as an afterthought, Thant took out a chukin sandwich from the bag (mayo, lettuce and extra chilli), sat down and began to eat. The problem is that a mutation appears to have crept in during gestation. Yes I’m afraid your son is malformed. He cannot survive without life support machines. However, there is one option. A Khan authorised and run project for kids just like your son has been set up. No I’m not 100% sure what it is all about. This is the first time since it was set up. All I know is that there is a high likelihood of the kids gaining a lot of honour, for themselves and it might extend to the clans themselves. Yes Yepto is involved, and also I believe are a bunch of Etherin scientists. Yes certainly my Reeeos, I will enter your son into the project. Yes of course…” * * * Preeow braced himself. He knew what was coming. And then the blackness closed over him. He could sense nothing. He knew that outside the techs were busy transferring his body into his new shell. Preeow began to slowly count the minutes in the darkness. And he also began to draw upon his past for comfort. * * * In the Brain nurseries, the brains played for most of the day. There was lots of games to play, such as power drain, hide and seek, racing, tag and lots of other games. It was here that the brains played until they were about 5 years old, then they went up into the lower school. In the lower school they learnt lots of basic stuff that all the Brains would need. They had also gotten a bigger shell. This shell had a lot more appendages to play around with. They still had a playtime, although they mostly played more grown up games. This was when they started to realise that all the games had a purpose and taught them something, or helped with skills they would need in later life. At around 10 they chose what careers they would like in later life. Preeow chose to become a Bolee Oloee, which was one of the more honourable careers, and would make his clan proud. Most of the class became either Bolee Oloees or ships, which gave them the most honour. Only the best were taken in to become Bolee Oloees; there was little need for any of them and they brought in the best honour. Ships were always needed, and plenty of people wanted to become them. They rarely brought in much honour; few of them ever went into military service. The rest of them often went into civil jobs. Several were hired by Yepto there on the spot, although it would be years yet before they saw any work or return. They would mostly be stationary, and would never move under their own power. They also wouldn’t gather much honour. This meant there were very few of them. But an advantage is that they would be free sooner. None of the shell-people were slaves, although the Khanate did allow slavery. The Khan had been adamant that they weren’t and never would be. However, they still had to pay off the cost of their education and their bodies. This could mean years of all their pay going to pay off this debt. And the ships and Bolee Oloee were the most expensive things to become. At around 15 they entered their careers, and transferred shells into the body they would inhabit, most likely for the rest of their long lives. That was what Preeow was doing now. * * * Light burst back on as his sensors were connected to his mind. He surveyed his new body. It was a Bolee Oloee mark 5, the first mark to use shell-people. He began to run a systems test upon his new body. The engineers hadn’t unlocked a lot of his systems, but he had full control over a lot of his sensor blisters. He ran them all out and surveyed his new body and power. To become a Bolee Oloee you had to be trust worthy. The Khan didn’t want anyone with the kind of firepower he was awarding the brain inside loose and attacking his citizens. And Preeow was very trust worthy and good at what he did. Finally the engineers and technitions released Preeow’s drive mechanism, and Preeow rolled out of the Yepto Bolee Oloee factory and onto the transport ship. It was another shell person, although she had graduated several years ahead of Preeow. They said hello and talked until she deposited Preeow at the military training base. There Preeow began to practice. The Khan was busy preparing for a great war, and Preeow would be a part of it, gaining honour for his clan and the Khan. Bookmark This permalink | 0 comments Trench WarfareJuly 21, 2008by danansan Medics scrambled around the makeshift sickbay, trying to save the lives of hundreds of wounded soldiers. At the front of the room, a wounded soldier in a tattered dark red uniform lay on a broken pillar of stone that was serving as a bed. There was a deep cut up his arm and his wings had been shattered, but the real problem was the deep wound that was evident in his chest. A few doctors were near. They didn't hold much hope of the nanos holding, the wound was so deep. It was a miracle that the soldier was still alive. And alive he was, though feverish. "Those bloody Zionites," said Lieutenant Cain conversationally, "Don't know when their beaten." "And are they?" asked ARN, "Beaten." Cain laughed, "No, they're not beaten. Not this time anyway. I was referring to South Anam, back in the day." "Oh right. So they're winning now?" "Obviously." The lieutenant closed his eyes, "Mortar incoming." Both soldier rolled out from their position and ran for the next piece of cover. Behind them, the bunker went up in an explosion. Similar explosions rocked the rest of the trench, just as forces from the Zionite 44th Barcelonan Silver Berets came over the top. ARN swung his rifle in an arc, taking out three of the Zionites in a wave of firepower. Ahead of him captain Cain was firing as well. Out of the corner of his eye ARN spotted a Zionite aiming at him. The Hytopolinian fired first, hitting the Zionite in the chest, where the Silver Beret's armour absorbed most of the blast. But there was enough force to knock him off his feet. Cursing at the poor shot, ARN ran forward to finish the job. The Zionite soldier desperately tried to fire off a shot, but it went wide. Then ARN's bayonet went into the chest, cutting through the armour, and killing the soldier dead. ARN got up and looked around. The trench was chaotic, but filling with Zionite dead as the Regicide Guard did their work. A Silver Beret came over the top just next to ARN, and met his fate at the end of the Hytopolinian's bayonet. On the pillar the soldier's condition was getting worse. The nanos were refusing to latch onto anything, and the doctors were in a heated discussion on whether to pull the plug on the young soldier. And then there were none thought ARN as he shot the head of a Zionite officer with a close range blast from his rifle. And it was true as well. There were no Zionites left in the trench. Lieutenant Cain raised his rifle triumphantly. There were cheers. ARN joined in, though his heart wasn't really in it. The sheer numbers of the Silver Berets were taking their toll on the Alliance's elite. Of the two hundred Regicide Guard that had landed on the planet, there were fewer than ninety left. A few more attacks and it could all be over. "Sir, there's an incoming from Captain H21C1," said corporal Farln, the Guard's communication officer, "He says that we need to push at the Zionites." "Ask him who'll be supporting us." Ordered the Lieutenant. Farln asked the question, then answered the Lieutenant, "He says that we shouldn't need support, sir." "Well you tell that stuck up…" "Sir! Zionites!" cried someone, as another wave of Silver Berets jumped down into the trench. ARN raised his rifle and shot two down before they could react. The doctors were no longer considering pulling the plug. A tough looking Fori had shown up and told them not to. Who were they to argue with a Regicide Guard? ARN had lost his rifle. He was fighting with a short sword in one hand and a laser pistol in the other. He swung the sword, cutting out the throat of a Silver Beret. He kicked the body out of the way, then fired his pistol into the face of another. Realising that his pistol was out of batteries he dropped both it and his short sword, pulling a longer, slightly curved sword from inside his coat. This he wielded two handed, cutting down another Zionite, In the din and chaos of battle he didn't know what was happening elsewhere, but he could only see a few of his comrades. Must be the final push he thought grimly as he ran a Silver Berets through. He staggered back as a rifle round hit him in the stomach. Only the protective vest he wore underneath his uniform saved him. Seizing the opportunity, a Zionite ran forward and lunged at ARN with his bayonet. ARN ducked aside just in time, but received a deep cut to his arm. He raised his sword and hit back at the Zionite. The blasé struck home, severing the Zionite's leg. The Silver Beret fell back screaming, and ARN prepared to finish. Just then he received an axe in the back. His tough insect wings saved him, but they shattered. ARN fell forwards, rolling over as he hit the ground, and found himself looking into the eyes of a Zionite officer, who raised a pistol and… Fell dead with a laser wound to the head. All around the trench Zionites were being shot dead. At the back of the trench a large number of Fori riflemen were lined up and firing into the Zionitesm who fell back. Right along the trench, the members of the Regicide Guard that were still alive pulled themselves up from the trench. Lieutenant Cain spoke: "Thank you for saving my men. Are you here to support our push?" A Fori in the uniform of a major stepped forwards, inducing salutes from the members of the Guard, "Major Flenan, 392nd Fori. There will be no pushing. All forces have been ordered to pull back to the Tombs. Move out!" The Fori climbed out of the trench, and marched back towards the tombs. The Guard members looked at each other, then climbed out of the trench to follow them. ARN was one of the last out. He looked at the survivors. "God," he said to corporal Fraln as she climbed out next to him, "There are only about thir…" He took a step back, looking with surprise at the blood that was pouring from his chest. "Sniper…" he managed, then collapsed. As he lay in the ground he felt little pain, only a tiredness. Out of the corner of his eye he vaguely saw Farln fire off a shot, presumably at the sniper. Then he closed his eyes and darkness engulfed him. ARN's eyes flickered open as he regained consciousness. He was lying on some sort of stone slab. There were white shapes everywhere, but the light was poor and he couldn't make anymore out. "Where am I?" His mouth was dry. "You're in the medic's tent inside the tombs." ARN looked around for the source of the voice, then things shifted into focus, and he saw Corporal Farln. "Corporal Farln, it's good to see you." He croaked "Corporal NS124, it's good to see you alive." Bookmark This permalink | 0 comments Out of the Dark-Part 2July 20, 2008by wert Thanks to Danansan and thegreatpl. Looking forward to seeing this uberstory play out! The Zionite cruisers hummed through space going FTL-1, barely cruising. Katijen sat at the kapitan’s chair on the bridge of the leading KRAKEN cruiser the Behemoth. Katijen was not looking his best, his hair and beard had grown long during the voyage and his eyes were bloodshot. His general’s uniform was creased and dirty with two months of solid wear. Around him sat his officers all dutifully working on the consoles that kept the massive cruiser in flight and in formation. Katijen’s eyes were fixed on the console in front of him with what looked like wonder. The console was currently displaying the navigational details and schematics related to the fleet’s position related to the Tomb Star. The Tomb Star, only 0.1 LY away according to the ships computers. Katijen smiled revealing a set of brown decaying teeth. Soon the whole Galaxy would tremble as the Kraken-. ”Kapitan sir” called a voice, interrupting Katijen’s train of thought. “Were picking up a signal on the long range scanners sir.” Katijen looked up sluggishly; it was Lieutenant Revere. “Yes Revere” called Katijen “What have we picked up?” “It can’t be” stuttered Revere looking at the computer printout in front of him, “It’s a wormhole!” Katijen smiled his mind ringing with the voice of the Kraken. The fleet sped on towards the Wormhole. The hole sat seedily swirling in space like a huge plughole rimmed with fire. For a few hours, the fleet hung just in front of the hole as if thinking about what to do. The suddenly all the cruisers fired up their engines, seemingly as one and sped on into the bright glowing hole. As they entered, they each disappeared with an audible pop as the wormhole flung them across the galaxy 9 times faster than lightning speed. Inside the Tomb, things were going well (for now). The Canthin and Ale-Turan archaeologists were keeping way from each other to at least reduce the numbers of awkward swearing matches and spiky snide remarks. The Canthin had their best brains on the markings C and were close to working it out. The Ale-Turans meanwhile had their super computer DAVE-E getting to work on markings D and had decoded all the way to the final row with all the word worked out so far. Smaller groups were working on excavating the floor and were excited to discover eight doors set into a circle into the floor. They were of course all still arguing about whether or not to pry open the doors. A small rumble from beneath the ground caused several of the more attentive to look down in alarm. A small trickle of dust spiralled down from the ceiling. Beneath the ground in a darkened room, Thant smiled as his blood splattered the floor. Vermillion looked on dispassionate as he cut all along his arm with the long blade. The circle on the floor shimmered and another rumble shook the labyrinth. Thant looked at Vermillion and smiled again. “Now we can begin Ms Orange. Now we can begin.” It began at 1:18am local time when the CFZS ships appeared in the Tomb World system. The Ale-Turan and Canthin fleets were caught by surprise and were outnumbered five-to-one by the Zionite craft. Even so, they put up a brave fight. The Zionite HOST and KRAKEN ships gradually overwhelmed the Canthins on one flank leaving the Ale-Turans surrounded. Finally, after three hours of battle, the Behemoth destroyed the last Elysium cruiser and the Zionite craft settled into high orbit above the Tomb World. On the ground all was chaos as the Commander of the Ale-Turan forces on the ground, Turranas tried to set up adequate defences, the hours of battle above gave Turranas a small window in which he ordered trenches dug and laser nests manned. Fortunately, for Turranas several Ale-Turan and Canthin craft had escaped the melee and managed to land just outside the tomb. Turranas ordered these ships destroyed and their compliment of troops staffed the hastily dug trenches. In all the Ale-Turan complement numbered just fewer than 7 thousand in the trenches. The Canthins had decided to dig in around the four main doors of the Tomb. (The archaeologists were prising open the doors mysterious hidden doors watched over by few platoons of men). The Zionites attacked by drop-shuttles, smashing into the dark black sand of the Tomb wilderness about a mile from the Ale-Turan front lines. The Silver Berets (Divian19th Colonial) attacked from the south-west sustaining heavy casualties from laser and plasma mortar fire. The Zionites were also unprepared for the psychic barrage they received from the Ale-Turan psychics. Many of the 19th collapsed mid charge with their brains haemorrhaging under the psychic assault. Even so, the 19th managed to push a narrow salient through the Ale-Turan trenches and were slowly pushing the Ale-Turans back. On the opposite side of the Tomb, the Silver Berets of the 44th Barcelonan fared little better. They were almost wiped out before reaching the trenches but they had one advantage: numbers. The Ale-Turan gunners found their heavy lasers overheating or running out of power with still more Zionites to kill. Many resorted to their adamantuim bayonets and pure battle rage, the fighting in the trenches was fierce and bloody fierce and bloody. Smaller probing attacks by the Divian 21st and 27th attacked from the east and west but the fighting here was less vicious with long range sniping being more common than bayonet charges. Even so heavy casualties were inflicted with soldiers gunned quickly once, out of cover. After another four hours of fighting the Ale-Turans pulled back to the Tomb passing the Canthin at the gates and trooping on inside. They had been reduced to fewer than two thousand and were all fatigued and shocked by the fighting. The Canthin squared up and got ready to try to repel the Zionite attack. Katijen jumped lightly into the trench his scoped rifle slung over one shoulder- he had not used it yet. Around him, his guard of four psychic Zionites walked forward in that strange shambolic gait of the partially insane. They were illegal but he didn’t care protection was his watchword. All four were over seven feet tall and heavily muscled. Katijen smiled, he was so close now! He was startled by a groan from of to his left. An Ale-Turan soldier lay there on his back a hand held over his stomach, blood seeping between his fingers. His tags named him as Corporal Herrane. Katijen grinned, a small trail of spittle slowly sliding down from the corner of his mouth. Katijen walked over to the groaning soldier who looked up with eyes that were seemingly empty of anything but a slow burning agony. Katijen raised his rifle cocked it aimed vaguely at the ale-turan’s temple. The Ale-Turan started, “No don’t-“ Katijen fired. Deep below the Tomb, Thant giggled as his blood continued to drain onto the circle. “Ah Mr Orange” he said his voice quavery from blood loss “I think I’m going to enjoy this!” Bookmark This permalink | 0 comments Now displaying 5 of 201 blog entries on page 1 of 41 Select a page: next | last |
